Mumbai CCTV & Community Safety Programme
Working with residents, housing societies and local authorities to promote community safety awareness and support access to government CCTV and surveillance infrastructure in Mumbai.
About This Programme
Cute Stars Foundation works to promote community safety in Mumbai's neighbourhoods, particularly in areas where children and families are vulnerable. We raise awareness of government CCTV schemes, help communities understand how to approach the relevant authorities, and support residents and housing societies in accessing safety infrastructure through official channels.
We do not install, operate or maintain CCTV systems. Our role is to promote awareness, provide information about government schemes and official processes, and help communities engage with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Mumbai Police and other competent authorities.
Why Community Safety Matters
Protecting Children
CCTV coverage in public spaces, school zones and residential areas deters crime and helps ensure the safety of children walking to school, playing outdoors and using community spaces.
Safer Neighbourhoods
Well-lit streets and CCTV surveillance reduce incidents of theft, harassment and anti-social behaviour, making neighbourhoods safer for all residents.
Community Vigilance
Organised community watch groups and awareness programmes empower residents to report suspicious activity and work collaboratively with local police.
Evidence & Accountability
CCTV footage assists law enforcement in investigating crimes, recovering missing children and holding offenders accountable.
Government CCTV & Safety Schemes
The following are government schemes and initiatives. Cute Stars Foundation provides awareness and guidance only. Always verify current procedures and eligibility with the relevant authority.
BMC CCTV Surveillance Network — Mumbai
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has deployed thousands of CCTV cameras across Mumbai under its Safe City initiative. Residents and housing societies can approach their ward office to request coverage in specific areas.
Visit BMC Portal ↗Mumbai Police — Safe City Project
Mumbai Police operates an extensive CCTV network integrated with the city's command and control centre. Citizens can report gaps in coverage or request increased surveillance through their local police station.
Visit Mumbai Police ↗Nirbhaya Fund — Safe City Scheme
The Government of India's Nirbhaya Fund supports Safe City projects in major cities including Mumbai, funding CCTV installation, emergency response systems and women's safety infrastructure.
Visit wcd.nic.in ↗Housing Society CCTV — Maharashtra
Registered cooperative housing societies in Maharashtra can apply for subsidised CCTV installation under state government safety schemes. Societies should approach their local ward office or the Maharashtra Housing Authority for current scheme details.
Visit Maharashtra Urban Development ↗How to Request CCTV Coverage in Your Area
Procedures vary by ward and jurisdiction. Always verify the current process with your local BMC ward office or police station.
Identify Your BMC Ward
Mumbai is divided into 24 administrative wards. Identify your ward and the contact details of your ward office. The BMC portal provides a ward locator for residents.
Submit a Written Request
Submit a written application to your BMC ward officer or local police station requesting CCTV installation or coverage in a specific public area. Include the location, reason and any supporting information.
Engage Your Housing Society
For residential areas, coordinate with your cooperative housing society committee. Societies can collectively approach the ward office, which carries more weight than individual requests.
Contact Your Local Corporator
Your elected BMC corporator can raise the matter with the ward office and advocate for CCTV installation in your area. Corporator contact details are available on the BMC portal.
Follow Up and Track
Follow up on your application regularly. You can also use the BMC's citizen grievance portal to track the status of your request.
Community Safety Awareness
Know Your Emergency Numbers
Police: 100 | Ambulance: 108 | Fire: 101 | Women Helpline: 1091 | Childline: 1098. Save these numbers and share them with your family and neighbours.
Street Lighting
Poor street lighting increases risk. Report non-functioning street lights to your BMC ward office or through the BMC's citizen portal. Well-lit streets complement CCTV coverage.
Community Police Liaison
Mumbai Police encourages residents to engage with their local beat officer and participate in community policing initiatives. Contact your nearest police station to learn more.
Dial 112 — Emergency Response
Dial 112 for any emergency — police, fire or medical. The Maharashtra Emergency Response System (MERS) coordinates all emergency services through a single number.
