Birth Certificate Correction

Guidance on correcting errors in birth certificates issued by municipal corporations, gram panchayats and other civil registration authorities in Maharashtra.

About This Guidance

A birth certificate is one of the most important identity documents for a child. Errors in the name, date of birth, parent names or place of birth can cause difficulties in obtaining Aadhaar, school admission, passports and government benefits. Cute Stars Foundation provides guidance to help families understand the correct procedure for getting birth certificate errors corrected through the appropriate civil registration authority.

We do not process corrections on behalf of families. Our role is to inform and guide families so they can approach the correct authority with the right documents.

Common Errors in Birth Certificates

Incorrect spelling of the child's name

Wrong date of birth recorded

Incorrect spelling or name of father or mother

Wrong place of birth or hospital name

Incorrect gender recorded

Name not added to birth certificate (name addition after registration)

General Procedure for Correction

Procedures vary by municipal corporation, municipality or gram panchayat. Always verify the current process with the relevant registrar's office.

1

Identify the Registrar

Approach the civil registration authority where the birth was registered — this is typically the municipal corporation (BMC for Mumbai), municipality, or gram panchayat of the area where the birth occurred.

2

Submit a Written Application

Submit a written application to the registrar requesting the correction. Specify the error clearly and state the correct information.

3

Provide Supporting Documents

Attach supporting documents such as hospital discharge summary, school records, Aadhaar card, or an affidavit declaring the correct information. The registrar will specify what is required.

4

Affidavit (if required)

For certain corrections, a notarised affidavit from the parent or guardian may be required. This must be obtained from a notary or executive magistrate.

5

Court Order (for major corrections)

Significant corrections — such as a change in date of birth — may require an order from a civil court. The registrar will advise if this is necessary.

6

Collect Corrected Certificate

Once the correction is approved, collect the corrected birth certificate from the registrar's office. Keep multiple certified copies.
